We believe that the transition to greener technologies needs to be affordable and easy to get. The modern world will change only with new economic tools.

I was listening to a radio program on National Public Radio, Marketplace I think, and a commentator was talking about the cell phone revolution. They made the comment that no one would be able to pay for twenty years of cell phone service all at once. Cell phone infrastructure and technology was massively subsidized. That made me think, if that is the case, how can we make green technologies for homes and buildings work like cell phones? Cell phones have spread throughout the entire world with astonishing speed. In many parts of the world cell phones are cheaper and more convenient that regular phones.  That is the model we are building on. Very few people can afford to pay for a geothermal heating and cooling system all at once, they need for it to be made affordable. When green energy technologies are affordable, then we will have a tipping point. Everyone will want to save energy - it will save them money.

Derek Walvoord, the founder and president of Chicago Energy Fund, has worked in construction, financials – both in the public and private sectors, government grants, and real estate. He had the idea that if green technologies could be financed easily and tied to real estate – like a mortgage – they could easily become widespread, changing the way we get our energy and heat and cool our homes.

Business Model

We Make small loans to pay for new green energy systems, like geothermal and photovoltaic, tie it to the house in the form of a lien (like a small mortgage), and make green energy affordable.

Almost no one has $15,000 to put into a geothermal heating and cooling system – but almost everyone would want to do it for $150 dollars a month. Especially if it means they can get rid of their gas bill.
